Ultrasound scans. Pregnant woman holds ultrasound scans of the foetus developing in her swollen abdomen (lower right). The ultrasound scans are images of the foetus produced by recording the echoes of high frequency sound passed through the abdomen. It is a useful technique for monitoring the health and growth of a foetus, and can be used for gender determination. Regular consultations are very important during pregnancy, not only to monitor the health of the foetus, but also of the mother. Diet and exercise are discussed, and solutions to problems such as nausea and constipation can be suggested.
