Prickly pear stem. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the stem of a prickly pear (Opuntia gosselina), a desert plant. Three pairs of guard cells (brown) can be seen. These surround the stomata, pores which open to allow gaseous exchange to take place. The numerous hairs protect against pests. Magnification: x240 at 6x7cm size.
