A new-born infant is held following Caesarian section, a surgical operation for delivering a baby through the abdominal wall. Caesarian section is indicated when there are risks to mother & baby from natural childbirth. Such risks include problems of size & orientation in the womb - a breech presentation that cannot be corrected, for example - or obstruction of the vagina by the placenta. It is also indicated in prolonged labour, toxaemia, and if the mother suffers an attack of genital Herpes simplex infection towards full term.
