Childbirth. A baby's head emerges during childbirth. A midwife, wearing sterile gloves, is supporting the head with her hands. Childbirth usually occurs at between 38 and 42 weeks pregnancy. In developed countries there are no serious problems for most women, thanks to the availability of blood transfusions, antibiotics and specialised medical equipment. In developing countries, however, the number of women who die from childbirth remains high. Photographed at the Academic Medical Centre in the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
