Woman in labour. Full-term pregnant woman standing by the window in a hospital room during early labour (childbirth). Labour involves painful, rhythmic contractions of the muscular uterine wall. These become stronger and more frequent as labour progresses. First the contractions dilate the cervix, the uterine neck, before they push the baby out of the body.
