Asparagus stem. Light micrograph of a section through the stem of an asparagus plant (Asparagus officinalis). The stem wall (pink) is at top. The inner tissue of the stem contains vascular bundles responsible for transporting water and nutrients around the plant. Large xylem vessels (blue walls) carry water up from the roots to the rest of the plant. The smaller phloem vessels (pink) carry sugars from parts that produce them (such as leaves) to parts the need or store them. Magnification: x70 when printed 10cm wide.
