Caesarean birth. Mother with the nurses and doctors who are performing a Caesarean section to deliver her baby. Caesarean births are usually performed when it is either dangerous or impossible to deliver the baby vaginally. Instead, the baby is delivered through an incision in the walls of the mother's abdomen and uterus. An epidural anaesthetic can used to numb the abdomen or a general anaesthetic can be used.
