Caesarean birth. Surgical team operating on a woman after delivering her baby by Caesarean section. During this procedure, the baby is delivered through an incision made in the woman's abdomen and uterus. It is performed when it is difficult or dangerous for the baby to be delivered vaginally. The placenta is seen in a dish at bottom left. This organ, formed in the uterus during pregnancy, allows the exchange of substances between the blood of the mother and the blood of the foetus. It is normally expelled through the vagina shortly after a baby is delivered, and is known as the afterbirth.
