Caesarean birth. Surgeons preparing to deliver twins by Caesarean section. The babies will be delivered through incisions made in thier mother's abdomen and uterus (womb). This procedure is performed when it is too difficult or dangerous to make a vaginal delivery. An epidural anaesthetic can be taken to numb the nerves that supply the chest and the lower half of the body, allowing the mother to remain conscious during the delivery. Alternatively, the operation may be performed under general anaesthetic. Photographed at Arras Hospital, France.
