Caesarian section delivery. Surgeons lifting a baby from its mother's uterus during a Caesarian section delivery. In this operation, the uterus is cut open to free the baby. It is usually performed when the birth is likely to be difficult or hazardous, for instance in a breech delivery. Increasingly, pregnant women are electing to have a Caesarian section to prevent the pain of natural childbirth. This practice is not condoned by most medical professionals, however. Photographed at the Saint Vincent de Paul Hospital in Paris, France.
