Stepping reflex. Paediatrician testing the stepping or walking reflex of a newborn baby. When held upright with its feet touching a firm surface, a newborn baby will produce a reflex stepping movement, although this reflex disappears after a few weeks. This is one of a number of routine tests that are carried out on newborn babies to check their health and foetal development. Photographed in the maternity hospital of Pitie-Salpetriere, Paris, France.
