Mother and baby after Caesarean. Mother watches her baby while recovering from her Caesarean section operation. The white substance on the baby's skin is known as vernix, which lubricates the passage through the birth canal in vaginal deliveries. During a Caesarean section, the baby is delivered through an incision made in its mother's abdomen and uterus. This procedure is performed when it is difficult or dangerous to deliver the baby in the normal way. Photographed at St. Mary's Hospital in Lacor, Gulu, Uganda.
