Postnatal monitoring. Nurse listening to a mother's abdomen using a stethoscope. She is monitoring the mother's recovery after she has given birth by Caesarean section. A Caesarean section is an operation where the baby is delivered through an incision made in its mother's abdomen and uterus (bandaged area). This procedure is usually performed when it is difficult or dangerous to deliver the baby in the normal way. However, some Western women choose to have their baby delivered this way. Photographed in the maternity ward at St. Mary's Hospital in Lacor, Gulu, Uganda.
