Mother holding her baby daughter in a hospital neonatal unit. The baby girl was born prematurely, weighing 1.5 kg and was 35 cm in length. She was one of twins; her sister did not survive. A malformation of her blood vessels (a patent ductus arteriosus, the failed closure of the vessel that by-passes the pulmonary circulation in the fetus) was corrected surgically.
