Baby in incubator. Newborn baby in an incubator being handled by a nurse who is using portholes in the container's side. The baby has a breathing tube attached to its nose. It has an electrocardiograph electrode fixed to its chest to monitor its heartbeat. The baby also has an intravenous drip (IV) inserted into its arm. IV drips help to prevent dehydration by gradually releasing fluid directly into a blood vessel. Incubators are used with ill or premature children to increase their chances of survival. Within the incubator the temperature, oxygen and humidity levels are controlled. It also reduces the chances of airborne infection.
