Premature baby. Premature baby in an incubator, watched over by a woman. An incubator is an airtight box which provides ideal conditions in which a baby can survive. Temperature, humidity and oxygen levels are all monitored. About 5-10% of babies in developed countries are born before 37 weeks gestation, often for no apparent reason. The babies have not fully developed, and are therefore ill-equipped for life outside the uterus. They are more prone to infection, and often cannot regulate blood sugar levels or body temperature. If a premature baby is kept under close observation, there is a very good chance it will survive.
