Premature baby in an incubator. The baby's mother is stroking the baby's hand through a hole in the incubator wall. Premature babies often have only partially developed organs and lack a fully functioning immune system. An incubator provides a constant temperature and humidity and protects the baby from infection. A respirator (green tube) provides the baby's under- developed lungs with extra oxygen. Photographed at the Paediatric Nursing Institute, Paris, France.
