Premature baby boy and nurse. The nurse is measuring the baby's temperature with a rectal thermometer. The baby is seen inside an incubator. A baby born prematurely (before 37-42 weeks of gestation) will need constant monitoring in a contained and controlled environment. His immune system and internal organs will still be developing and he will have problems maintaining a moist skin and his body temperature. The incubator maintains the levels for the temperature, humidity and oxygen. Photographed in the Netherlands.
