Caption

Intensive care baby. The baby has a feeding tube taped to its mouth. The oxygen tube (transparent) has been removed from its nose to allow mucus to be cleared with a gentle suction tube (black). Babies that are born premature or ill must be kept in a secure and sterile environment as they are often weak and unable to defend themselves against infections. Most such babies survive, however.
