Groundsel stem. Light micrograph of a section through a groundsel stem (Senecio vulgaris), showing xylem vessels (brown, upper centre). The xylem transport water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant. The smaller circles (green) enclosing the xylem are phloem vessels, which transport carbohydrates and hormones around the plant. The xylem and phloem are surrounded by large parenchyma cells (blue/green), which support the stem. At top is the epidermis, a single layer of cells that form the outer surface of the plant stem. Eosin stain.
