The lungs of premature babies have not had time to develop properly, and the machine at left is a ventilator, designed to help the baby breathe. It is an SLE 5000 Infant Ventilator, manufactured by the healthcare manufacturing company SLE. The SLE 5000 was launched in November 2002. SLE is based in Croydon, UK.
