Throat examination. A young boy holds his mouth wide open for a doctor to examine his throat. His tongue is being held down by a flat, wooden tongue depressor. The doctor (not seen) is looking for signs of throat disorders such as tonsillitis or pharyngitis, both of which are common in child- ren. Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, two clumps of tissue at the back of the mouth that help to fight infection. It is usually caused by repeated infection of the tonsils and is treated by antibiotics. Pharyngitis is inflammation of the pharynx, the passage connecting the nose, mouth and oesophagus. It is often provoked by a cold and usually clears up spontaneously.
