Throat examination. A young boy holds his mouth open while a doctor takes a sample from his tonsils with a swab. The boy's tongue is being held down by a flat wooden tongue depressor. This test is carried out for tonsillitis (infection of the tonsils) to identify the micro-organism that has caused the infection. Tonsillitis is most common in children, and is usually caused by bacterial infection of the tonsils.
