Throat examination. Young boy has his sore throat examined by a paediatric doctor using a fibre-optic tongue depressor. The battery- operated handheld depressor is pushed down on the tongue while light travelling along an optical fibre illuminates the throat. The doctor can then observe the sore throat, and diagnose whether it is due to pharyngitis, tonsillitis, strep throat, or the first symptoms of a developing illness such as influenza or chickenpox.
