Throat examination. Young boy has his sore throat examined by a paediatric doctor using a wooden tongue depressor. The depressor is attached to a handheld light source to illuminate the throat. The doctor can then observe the sore throat, and diagnose whether it is due to pharyngitis, tonsillitis, strep throat, or the first symptoms of a developing illness such as influenza or chickenpox.
