Monitoring a baby's brain. Device held to a baby's head measures its brain activity using infrared (IR) light. The device allows moni- toring of the brain's development & brain damage. The device emits IR which can penetrate tissue and bone for up to 10 centimetres. A receiver next to the emitter detects reflected IR. Different areas of the brain have different functions. Active areas have a greater supply of oxygen-carrying blood; this affects the characteristics of the reflected IR. Computer analysis of the data received produces an image showing the area where the activity is centred. The device was developed at University College Hospital, London, Britain.
