Child with immune deficiency in a sterile enclosure. Openings in the transparent wall contain plastic tubes (green) ending in gloves (not seen), allowing staff to reach inside without compromising the sterility. In cases of severe immune deficiency, pathogens (disease-causing micro-organisms) that normally cause mild illness can be fatal. Immune deficiency can be caused by exposure to radiation, infectious disease (such the acquired immune deficiency syndrome, AIDS) or a genetic defect (primary immune deficiency). Photographed at the Necker children's hospital, Paris, France.
