Baby with immune deficiency in a sterile chamber. In cases of severe immune deficiency, pathogens (disease-causing micro-organisms) that normally cause mild illness can be fatal. People outside the chamber can reach in using plastic tubes that extend through the walls and end in gloves. Immune deficiency can be caused by exposure to radiation, infectious disease (such the acquired immune deficiency syndrome, AIDS) or a genetic defect (primary immune deficiency). Photographed at the Necker children's hospital, Paris, France.
