Child with immune deficiency being tended by health workers. In cases of severe immune deficiency, pathogens (disease-causing micro-organisms) that normally cause mild illness can be fatal. The workers wear masks and gloves to minimise the child's risk of infection. Immune deficiency can be caused by exposure to radiation, infectious disease (such the acquired immune deficiency syndrome, AIDS) or a genetic defect (primary immune deficiency). Photographed at the Necker children's hospital, Paris, France.
