Paediatric examination. Doctor using a stethoscope to listen to a baby's lungs. A stethoscope is used to listen to sounds within the body. The doctor has placed the diaphragm side of the stethoscope attachment on the baby's chest, over the upper part of its right lung. This diaphragm side is used to listen to low-pitched sounds. The sound of the baby's breathing is transmitted through the tube to earpieces in the doctor's ears. This will allow the doctor to detect disorders such as lung infections.
