Autumn leaves. Fallen maple leaves, Acer platanoides, in their yellow and red autumn colours. Deciduous trees shed their leaves in autumn to prevent water loss and frost damage. The change in colour is due to breakdown of the green pigment chlorophyll, which absorbs energy from sunlight (photosynthesis) in healthy leaves.
