Autumn maple leaf. Autumn colour in a maple leaf (Acer macrophyllum). Maple trees are common across the Northern Hemisphere, and the leaf has been adopted as the symbol of Canada. They are popular ornamental trees as during the autumn the leaves turn the brilliant yellow seen here, or even to bright red. This colour change is due to the breakdown of the green pigment chlorophyll, which masks the other colours for the rest of the year.
