Autumn leaf. Close-up of the surface of a maple leaf (Acer sp.) showing autumn colour. The green pigment chlorophyll has been broken down in most places, revealing red and yellow pigments which are usually hidden. The veins can be seen as a pale network against the coloured leaf. The leaf's main vein, the midrib, is seen running down centre.
