Maple leaves (Acer sp. ) showing autumnal colour. The yellowed leaf colours are due to the breakdown of the green chlorophyll pigment. It is a deciduous tree, shedding all its leaves in autumn. The trunk of the tree (right) is covered in a grey/green lichen. Photographed in the Northumberland National Park, England.
