Breast milk pumping machines. Two pumping machines for obtaining and storing the milk of a lactating mother's breasts. At left is a modern pump, while at centre is a 30-year-old model. Breast milk is considered an ideal mix of nutrients & antibodies to feed and protect a baby. Such machines are used to obtain and store milk for later use. They are also used to maintain lactation (milk production) if breastfeeding is not immediately possible, like when a baby is born prematurely. They are also needed if the mother or baby has problems with the normal breastfeeding process. Photographed in 2002, at St. Richard's Hospital, Chichester, West Sussex, England.
