Body temperature measurement. Four year old boy suffering from a fever (pyrexia) has a thermometer in his mouth. The boy's cheeks are flushed. The thermometer is a standard glass medical thermometer containing mercury. A fever is when the body temperature rises above normal (oral temperature of 37 degrees celsius). It is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection and is usually accompanied by shivers, headache and nausea.
