Cancer of uterus and ovary. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan showing a cancer of the uterus in a fifty-five year old woman. The affected region of the uterus is seen as a round, black area at upper centre right. The black area below and to the left is an ovary, where the cancer has also spread. Cancer of the uterus affects two main sites, the cervix and the endometrium (lining of the uterus). In the latter the first symptom in a woman after the menopause is a blood stained vaginal discharge. Early diagnosis of the cancer is treated by hysterectomy and the removal of the Fallopian tubes and ovaries. The pelvis is coloured red.
