Laser cone biopsy of cervix, with cone. Colposcopic view of surgical (cone) biopsy of a human cervix with severe pre-cancerous changes. At centre, the abnormal tissue removed appears as a cone (brownish-white) in the shelled-out, healthy cervical tissue (dark pink). Cautery, using a laser has produced the sharp, black margins around the treatment site. A cone biopsy removes a conical section of abnormal tissue in the cervical canal, out of sight of the colposcope. If the entire area of abnormal tissue is removed, no further treatment is required. In cases of more advanced disease, surgery or radiotherapy may be needed.
