Laser cone biopsy of cervix. Colposcopic view of surgical (cone) biopsy of a human cervix with severe pre-cancerous changes. The abnormal area has been removed leaving a blackened, shelled out hole in the dark pink, cervical tissue (at centre). Ellipsoid, well-defined margins delineate the conical area which has been excised by laser treatment. The procedure removes a cone of abnormal tissue from the cervical canal. If the entire abnormal area has been removed and is confirmed on histological examination, then no further treatment is necessary. In more advanced disease, surgery or radiotherapy may be needed.
