Healthy cervix. Close-up view of a healthy cervix. The cervix is doughnut shaped, with an opening (os) at centre. It is surrounded by the vaginal walls. Here, there is a yellow discharge at the os of the cervix. The cervix is a cylindrical structure, several centimetres in length & less than 2.5 centimetres wide. It comprises the neck and lower part of the uterus. The cervix separates the uterus from the vagina. Running through the cervix is a canal through which sperm enter the womb & blood leaves the womb during menstruation. The cervical canal also forms part of the birth canal during childbirth.
