Ovarian cyst. Gross specimen of an ovarian cyst with a ruler (in centimetres) to indicate size. Ovarian cysts are abnormal fluid-filled swellings in an ovary. Most are non-cancerous and will disappear without treatment. Ovarian cysts can often exist without causing any symptoms in the patient. Occasionally there may be abdominal discomfort, pain during sexual intercourse, or menstrual irregularities as a result of the cyst. Complex cysts may require surgical removal.
