Ovarian cancer. Gross specimen of a cancerous tumour (cystadenocarcinoma) of the ovary. Cystadenocarcinoma arises from glandular epithelium (surface tissue). It invades the supporting connective tissue of the ovary and can spread (metastasise) to other parts of the body. This type of tumour accounts for around half of all ovarian cancer. Risk factors for ovarian cancer include uninterrupted ovulation, exposure to high levels of oestrogen, and increasing age. Treatment is surgery with follow-up chemotherapy.
