Ovarian cyst. Patient with a massively distended abdomen caused by a very large ovarian cyst. Cysts are abnormal liquid-filled sacs that form on the outer edges of the ovaries. An ovarian cyst is not usually malignant, but may reach a large size and place pressure on surrounding organs. Occasionally there may be abdominal pain, which is exacerbated during sexual intercourse. Surgical removal is required, especially if menstrual irregularities occur. This image was taken in Africa, where lack of basic medical services, particularly in rural areas, allows many conditions to progress before treatment can be provided.
