Caption

Vaginal smear. Coloured light micrograph of cells from a vaginal smear, showing cancerous cells (upper right). Smears are performed on a regular basis to check for signs of cancer. This aids early diagnosis of the disease, and the earlier the diagnosis, the better the chance of a cure. Smears that indicate cancer are followed up by more rigorous tests, such as biopsies. Sexually active women should have regular smear tests to help diagnose cancer as soon as possible.
