Cervical cancer cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cervical cancer cells. The irregular surface of these cells is characteristic of cancer cells. The irregular surface structures cause changes in the adhesion properties and allow the cells to move. Along with rapid and chaotic cell division, this allows cancer cells to clump and form tumours which can invade and destroy surrounding tissues. Cancer of the cervix (the neck of the uterus) is one of the most common cancers affecting women and can be fatal.
