Surface of a cancer cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a cervical cancer cell. The strands are microvilli, small projections of the cell's cytoplasm. They cause changes in the cell's adhesion properties and allow the cells to move. This, and rapid and chaotic cell division, allows cancer cells to clump and form tumours that can invade and destroy surrounding tissue.
