Caption

Ovarian cancer. Coloured frontal computed tomography (CT) scan of the pelvis of a women with a large malignant (cancerous) tumour (red) in her left ovary. The cause of ovarian cancer is unknown, although risk factors include a family history of the disease and the use of infertility drugs or hormone replacement therapy. Taking the contraceptive pill and having children both reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. Symptoms include abdominal pain and bloating, and irregular periods. Treatment is with surgery, to remove both ovaries and the womb, often combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
