The fallopian tubes lead off either side of the uterus (womb, red), but are not visible here as the blockages prevent the contrast medium from entering the tubes. The damage may be a result of pelvic inflammation, which is most often caused by sexually transmitted diseases. Blocked fallopian tubes are a cause of infertility. Treatment is with surgical unblocking or removal of the tubes. A hysterosalpingogram is taken after the introduction of a contrast medium to the uterus via a catheter (bottom centre) in the vagina.
