Caption

Vaginal prolapse repair surgery. Image 9 of 9. Close up of the genitals of a woman who has just finished undergoing corrective surgery for a vaginal wall prolapse. This type of prolapse is a rectocele, where the muscles of the posterior vaginal wall have weakened, causing a region of the intestine to protrude through the entrance to the vagina. During this surgery, part of the posterior wall is removed so that the ends can be stitched together to strengthen the vaginal muscles. For a series showing the entire surgical procedure, see images M850/724 - M850/732.
