Cervical treatment. Surgeon using a colposcope to direct a laser beam which destroys abnormal tissue in a woman's cervix. The colposcope is fitted with a binocular microscope to allow accurate examination and surgery under direct vision. The colposcope can also be used to help confirm the diagnosis of a smear test by viewing abnormal cells in the cervix which have been stained with acetic acid or iodine. Cervical abnormalities may be precursors to cancerous changes. No further treatment is necessary if the abnormal area is totally removed.
